Journalism, media markets and new technology – trends and predictions for 2017

June 26 2017

Fritt Ord and the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism invite the public to the launch of an annual media survey, the Reuters Institute Digital News Report, and a debate on new trends in the Norwegian media landscape, on Monday, 26 June 2017, from 5.00-7.00 p.m. at Fritt Ord’s premises in Uranienborgveien 2, Oslo.

The Reuters Institute Digital News Report is the world’s largest media survey on the development of digital media habits. Norway was included in the survey last year for the first time, and this year’s figures are indicative of the trend in the Norwegian media market, compared with trends in 36 other countries in America, Europe and Asia. This year, researchers at the University of Bergen are compiling a separate sub-report on the Norwegian findings.

New figures show that Norwegians are more digitally-oriented and have a greater propensity to pay for services than other Europeans. We are generally loyal to established players, also in the digital arena, while newly established, fully digital competitors draw fewer readers compared with the rest of Europe. Meanwhile, the media market and the way in which journalists work are in rapid flux. A growing share of the general public gets its news through social media. In this media landscape, questions related to sorting algorithms, fact checking and editorial responsibility are becoming increasingly important. What practical and ethical dilemmas arise in relation to the use of new digital means of communication and publication platforms?
