The impact of the corona crisis on Norwegian journalism + launch of the media survey ‘2020 Digital News Report’
Time: Thursday, 18 June, 8.30-10.00 a.m.
Place: live streaming on www.frittord.no
Norwegians are at the top of the class when it comes to paying for online journalism. The corona crisis appears to be further reinforcing this trend. What impact has this had on the Norwegian media industry and on Norway’s public sphere? Does journalism occupy a stronger position in Norway than in other countries? Has that been reflected in the quality of public discourse lately, in particular? What role have local newspapers and national media played during the corona crisis – as the glue that holds society together and as avenues for the dissemination of information?
The live stream of this event will start here on Thursday, 18 June at 8.30 a.m.:
The media survey “The Digital News Report” is the world’s most comprehensive survey of digital media habits. This year’s figures reveal new trends in journalism about topics such as the climate, the growth of podcasts as a medium, the propensity to pay for journalism, etc.
The report can be downloaded here: DNR 2020 FINAL
With support from Fritt Ord, Norway has been included in the survey for the fifth consecutive year. The report compares the development of the Norwegian media market with that of more than 30 other countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia. Researchers at the University of Bergen have carried out their own partial survey on conditions in Norway.
In addition to a presentation of this year’s figures, Fritt Ord invites the public to a live streamed media debate on the role of the media in crisis situations.
