Communications consultant

The Fritt Ord Foundation has a permanent position as a communications consultant available from 1 August.

Fritt Ord is looking for an extroverted, resourceful, and orderly person with the ability to work both systematically and independently, and who can manage many projects at the same time. The job will focus mainly on providing information to the general public about the Fritt Ord Foundation’s many projects, grants, and initiatives. In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for some specific projects carried out under the auspices of the Foundation itself.

We invite applicants with higher education and at least 3-5 years of work experience in journalism and/or communications. The position requires an intimate knowledge of most aspects of life in Norway, including the public sphere, as well as cultural and community life. Applicants must have an excellent command of the Norwegian language, as well as oral and written English. Individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Geologist Farouk Al-Kasim joined the the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate in 1968, shaping Norwegian petroleum resource management for decades afterwards. Now, documentary film director Halkawt Mustafa and producer Janne Hjeltnes are making a film about Al-Kasim’s life and reflections.
“Farouk tells me something in this film that he has not talked about before, because he has always told the version he feels Norway wanted to hear,” recounts Mustafa, who has Iraqi roots himself.

Part of the problem is media outlets failing to cover culture in formats and ways that appeal to people under 30, says Ida Madsen Hestman, editor, freelance critic, and founder of TBATBA.no. Last year, she started the kind of publication she herself would want to read.
