The Fritt Ord Foundation and The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters invite the public to a conversation about fake news, fact-checking and public trust, on Tuesday 17 October 2017, 5 p.m., at Uranienborgveien 2.

In 2016, Oxford Dictionaries declared post-truth its international word of the year, and defined it as the state of affairs when “objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.” PolitiFact named fake news its 2016 “Lie of the Year”. Since then, the term has lost much of its initial meaning and content in the public debate.

This past summer, it was announced that the Fritt Ord Foundation would be buying Wergelandsveien 29 in Oslo, the building in which the House of Literature Foundation has its activities. The seller was Entra, which has owned the building since the beginning.

In collaboration with Chapter: the Stavanger International Festival for Literature and Freedom of Expression, we invite the public to “Demo: Music, propaganda and resistance” on Friday, 22 September 2017, at 10.00 a.m. and 12.00 p.m. at the Sølvberget Library and House of Literature. The conversation is part of this year’s festival programme. The artist Morten Traavik, the musician Moddi and the Slovenian band Laibach will be participating. The moderator is journalist and musician Guttorm Arndreassen.

The Fritt Ord Foundation sponsors half a year of study and research in Oxford for a Norwegian journalist. The fellowship will be given to a journalist ordinarily resident in Norway. The fellow will spend six months at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University, commencing January 2018.
