Research on sensitive topics - between media and politics

September 11 2018

Fritt Ord invites the public to a seminar on what it is like to participate in the social debate as a researcher in an inflammatory field, at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, 11 September 2018 at Uranienborgveien 2, Oslo.

Where do the dividing lines go between politics, media and science? What does it mean to communicate information about research in politically inflamed fields like migration and integration? Is it any wonder that a growing number of researchers are becoming hesitant about participating in the social debate? How is it possible to report on research when social science research is so often politicised?

The event takes its starting point in Mette Andersson’s latest book: The controversy over scientific method. The book analyses migration and integration researchers’ experiences of how they convey their research. As scholarly topics, migration and integration are among the touchiest topics in our society. How do researchers manage to convey their analyses to different groups, and how do they reconcile their role as citizens and their role as experts?

Programme:
Introduction to the topic by Mette Andersson, professor at the Department of Sociology and Human Geography, University of Oslo.

Panel discussion, featuring:

  • Nils August Andresen – editor-in-chief of the journal Minerva
  • Mette Andersson – professor at the Department of Sociology and Human Geography, University of Oslo
  • Grete Brochmann – professor at the Department of Sociology and Human Geography, University of Oslo
  • Øivind Fuglerud – professor of Social Anthropology at the Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo
