The Fritt Ord Foundation's seminar for student newspapers 2019: podcast

On several occasions, Universitas has received support from Fritt Ord for its foreign coverage. Here, they talk about their reporting trips to Romania and Lebanon.
On Friday, 15 February 2019, Fritt Ord hosted its annual full-day seminar for student newspapers and student media.

The purpose of the seminar was to offer a new understanding of new journalistic disciplines and to exchange experiences with other student media. Previous seminars have examined topics such as photojournalism, the reporting genre, the transition from paper to digital media, and student media as a forum for public debate. This year, the seminar focused on the podcast genre.

More than 30 participants from student newspapers and student media all across the country participated in the seminar. This included editors, journalists and radio journalists from e.g. Universitas, Studvest, Radio Revolt, Volda Student Radio, Student Radio in Bergen, the Social Scientist and Tuntreet.

At the seminar, participants learned more about:

  • What distinguishes different types of podcasts from radio documentaries to current affairs podcasts
  • Podcasts as a reporting format
  • Multimedia journalism – how can radio journalists and journalists who write work together to present interesting cases?
  • How has the podcast genre developed over time in Norway?

Ingerid Salvesen, a journalist with a background from the financial daily Dagens Næringsliv, the recipient of the Fritt Ord Foundation’s Oxford grant and programme host for the foreign affairs podcast “The World!” talked about the making of a good news and current affairs podcast.

Ida Karine Gullvik, a journalist with a background from Klassekampen and NRK, currently programme host and producer of the podcast “The Movement” from the Free Trade Union, talked about what characterises a good podcast.

VG journalist Håkon F. Høydal has been awarded Fritt Ord’s journalism fellowship at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford in the spring of 2026.
His project explores what journalists can learn from new trauma research when interviewing both “monsters and victims” in crime and abuse cases.
