Footage from the debate on JIHAD: A Story of the Others

On Tuesday 25 August the Fritt Ord Foundation and Fuuse hosted a screening of the documentary film JIHAD: A Story of the Others, by Emmy Award winning director Deeyah Khan.

Following the film, there was a moderated conversation about the film’s key themes: extremism and deradicalization, as well as a short questions and answers session.

Footage from the conversation is published here and on the Fritt Ord Youtube-channel. The documentary film will be shown on NRK on Tuesday 29 September.

The panel consisted of:

  • Alyas Karmani, a former follower of Abu Muntasir, one of the founding fathers of the jihadi movement in the UK. Karmani is now an imam and active campaigner against extremism.
  • Professor Tore Bjørgo at Politihøgskolen and NUPI
  • Film Director and Producer Deeyah
  • Kjetil Stormark, Editor-in-Chief of Hatespeech International (moderator)

Call for nominations: Free Media Awards 2025

In collaboration with the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS of Hamburg, the Fritt Ord Foundation has allocated the Free Media Awards annually since 2004 to Eastern European journalists and media that defy every obstacle to tirelessly ensure independent press coverage. Russia’s war against Ukraine and the subsequent wave of disinformation clearly demonstrates the need for independent reporting in the region. Journalist, editorial teams and media companies in and from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine and Hungary who make a contribution to press freedom through their investigative, independent reporting can be nominated for the Free Media Awards.
