In 2009 the encyclopedia went from something most Norwegian households had on their shelves to a free web based encyclopedia. Fritt Ord and The DNB Savings Bank Foundation Sparebankstiftelsen DNB initiated the countinuation of the SNL, Store medisinske leksikon – The Great Medical Encyclopedia, Norsk biografisk leksikon – The Norwegian Biographical Encyclopedia and Norsk kunstnerleksikon – The Encyclopedia of Norwegian Artists.

The encyclopedia contains a collection of approximately 200 000 articles, some of which have a history of revision going back to encyclopedic work published in 1906.
