Call for applications: Free Media Awards 2022

In collaboration with the ZEIT Foundation of Hamburg, the Fritt Ord Foundation has allocated the Free Media Awards annually since 2004 to Eastern European journalists and media that defy every obstacle to tirelessly ensure independent press coverage. Russia’s war against Ukraine and the subsequent wave of disinformation clearly demonstrate the need for independent reporting in the region. Journalists and media in Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Belarus and Armenia that promote freedom of the press through their investigative and independent reporting are eligible to be nominated for the Free Media Awards.

Film and talk session about artistic resistance against the military coup in Myanmar

The Human International Film Festival and Fritt Ord invite the public to the Norwegian premiere of the new documentary film ‘Myanmar Diaries’, followed by a talk session, at 5 p.m. on Thursday, 3 March at the Vega Scene in Oslo. Made by the Myanmar Film Collective, the film recently won the Berlinale Documentary Award.

Jonas Bendiksen, fake news, and new NJP photographers

Magnum photographer Jonas Bendiksen will present his book The Book of Veles at Fritt Ord’s premises at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, 1 March. The programme will also include talks with five of the new photographers chosen to participate in The Norwegian Journal of Photography (NJP).

Since 1963, the book boat Epos has been a popular bearer of culture to small ports and villages up and down the west coast of Norway. After Epos’ very existence was threatened, Fritt Ord responded by granting MNOK 3 over a three-year period to keep it afloat.

Fritt Ord-supported documentary nominated for Oscars

The award-winning animated film FLEE has been nominated for Oscars in the categories for Best International Documentary Feature, Best Animated Feature Film and Best International Feature Film. The film has already won a numerous awards at different film festivals, including the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary Feature at the Sundance Film Festival and the Nordic Council’s Film Prize in 2021.

Continuing focus on Norwegian Journalism

Over the past four years, the Fritt Ord Foundation has earmarked nearly MNOK 100 in funding for journalism projects in Norway. This focus will continue, and it has now been decided that the Foundation will call for applications for funding of MNOK 25 per year for Norwegian journalism in 2022 and 2023.
