The year 2022 will go down in history as a year deeply marked by the tragedy of war in Europe. However, this is also the year in which Norway is commemorating and celebrating that it has been 50 years since Section 213 of the Penal Code was repealed, decriminalising homosexuality in Norway There will be events throughout the year, including book publications, exhibitions, podcasts and a variety of debate and art projects, many of which will be organised under the banner of the Year of Queer Culture 2022. Numerous initiatives have received support from the Fritt Ord Foundation.
The Fritt Ord Foundation announces a call for applications for 10 annual grants of NOK 250 000 each for critics who write for daily or weekly newspapers, or who write reviews for TV/or radio.

In collaboration with the ZEIT Foundation of Hamburg, the Fritt Ord Foundation has allocated the Free Media Awards annually since 2004 to Eastern European journalists and media that defy every obstacle to tirelessly ensure independent press coverage. Russia’s war against Ukraine and the subsequent wave of disinformation clearly demonstrate the need for independent reporting in the region. Journalists and media in Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Belarus and Armenia that promote freedom of the press through their investigative and independent reporting are eligible to be nominated for the Free Media Awards.
The Human International Film Festival and Fritt Ord invite the public to the Norwegian premiere of the new documentary film ‘Myanmar Diaries’, followed by a talk session, at 5 p.m. on Thursday, 3 March at the Vega Scene in Oslo. Made by the Myanmar Film Collective, the film recently won the Berlinale Documentary Award.
Magnum photographer Jonas Bendiksen will present his book The Book of Veles at Fritt Ord’s premises at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, 1 March. The programme will also include talks with five of the new photographers chosen to participate in The Norwegian Journal of Photography (NJP).
Since 1963, the book boat Epos has been a popular bearer of culture to small ports and villages up and down the west coast of Norway. After Epos’ very existence was threatened, Fritt Ord responded by granting MNOK 3 over a three-year period to keep it afloat.
The award-winning animated film FLEE has been nominated for Oscars in the categories for Best International Documentary Feature, Best Animated Feature Film and Best International Feature Film. The film has already won a numerous awards at different film festivals, including the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary Feature at the Sundance Film Festival and the Nordic Council’s Film Prize in 2021.
While today’s young people have multiple alternatives for expressing their identities, few of them ever mention carefree relationships between their bodies and school showers. The Fritt Ord-supported documentary film “Stories from the Shower” takes us through an inevitable chapter in the lives of all adolescents – school changing rooms.
Norwegian film maker Margreth Olin is one of six recipients of the American Chicken & Egg Award for documentary films. The prize is awarded to female and non-binary film makers who strive to promote change through their work.

On 18 February 2022, the Henie Onstad Art Centre on Høvikodden near Oslo will open the exhibition entitled Every Moment Counts – AIDS and its Feelings. The exhibition will commemorate that 2022 marks 50 years since Norway decriminalised sex between men.
Each year, Fritt Ord awards the Fritt Ord Prize to individuals or institutions that have shown civil courage and worked to defend and strengthen freedom of expression and the conditions for it in Norway, especially by encouraging dynamic debate.

In 2021, the Fritt Ord Foundation handed out a total of MNOK 121.6, divided among 1320 successful applications. Now we are ready for new all-out efforts once again in 2022!
