Norwegian Journal of Photography
The Norwegian Journal of Photography was established in 2011 to serve as an arena where independent photographers who work in the interface between traditional press photography on the one hand and art photography on the other will be able to present the full scope of their projects.
NJP brings together and supports selected Norwegian photographic documentary projects. Our goal is to present Norwegian photography internationally while nurturing the photographic community at home. We aim to create an inspiring forum where Norwegian photographers can showcase their work both nationally and internationally. NJP is an arena where photographers can continue to produce relevant and engaging visual stories.
After an extensive evaluation process, projects are selected. Over a two-year cycle, the chosen photographers receive editing guidance and assistance in applying for financial support. They take part in seminars, workshops, and a masterclass featuring prominent international guest lecturers. Throughout the process, each photographer works closely with NJP’s editors.
Our goal with NJP has been to create a relevant and representative book of Norwegian documentary photography — one that combines outstanding images with strong storytelling. We encourage photographers to challenge the definition of documentary photography while striving to produce socially relevant and independent stories.
Applicants to NJP should already be engaged in a larger photographic project or have made substantial preparations for one before applying.
The Norwegian Journal of Photography is part of Fritt Ord’s initiative to strengthen the position of documentary photography in Norway.
