JIHAD: A Story of the Others - Norwegian Film Premiere and Conversation

25. august 2015

Fritt Ord and Fuuse invite to the Norwegian premiere of JIHAD: A Story of the Others, followed by a discussion on extremism and deradicalization on Tuesday, 25 August 2015 at 5 p.m. Venue: The Fritt Ord Foundation, Uranienborgveien 2, Oslo.

Participants in the conversation are: Abu Muntasir, one of the founding fathers of the jihadi movement in the UK. Today he works on discouraging young people from joining the Islamic State. Alyas Karmani, a devoted follower of Abu Muntasir in the past. He is now an imam and active campaigner against extremism. Professor Tore Bjørgo at Politihøgskolen and NUPI. Film Director and Producer Deeyah.

Editor-in-Chief of Hatespeech International, Kjetil Stormark, will moderate the conversation.

About the film JIHAD:
The world has watched aghast as thousands of young men and women abandon comfortable lives in the West to join the barbaric ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria). Girls and boys have gone rapidly from being apparently well-adjusted school kids, to enthusiastically joining the ranks of Kalashnikov-wielding religious warriors and burkah-clad “jihadi brides”. It feels like a new and frightening phenomenon, one which has left many feeling bewildered and revulsed.

But as this new documentary film by Emmy Award winning director Deeyah Khan shows, Westerners embracing jihad and death is nothing new. For three generations now, young people across Europe have fallen prey to extremist groups and fought, killed and died with mujahideen movements from Afghanistan, Bosnia, and Kashmir, to Chechnya and Burma.

In this film, Deeyah, who has herself faced threats from extremist fundamentalists in the past, sets out to find out why the jihadi message has such an alluring hold on young Westerners.

First, she went back to the roots, spending two years with some of the leading figures in the British jihadi movement from previous generations. She secured unprecedentedly emotional and raw testimony from former extremists, learning from the inside what it is like to be drawn into radicalism, to have your life ruined by extremism and violence, a message which has continued appeal cascading down through the generations.

In JIHAD, Deeyah meets one of the founding fathers of the British jihad, who went abroad to fight, and who preached extremism to thousands of young Muslims across the UK and the West.

Deeyah’s search for answers then takes her to the streets of modern Britain, meeting today’s young Muslims, caught between extremism and the War on Terror. She meets young British Muslims who feel angry and alienated, facing issues of discrimination, identity crises and rejection by both mainstream society and their own communities and families; but in surprising moments of insight and enlightenment, she also finds hope and some possible answers to the complex situation we are currently in.

JIHAD received its world premiere on ITV as part of the Exposure series with the title JIHAD A BRITISH STORY in June 2015.

About the participants in the conversation:

Abu Muntasir is one of the founding fathers of the jihadi movement in the UK. For nearly two decades he gave platforms to hate preachers, raised funds for jihad, personally recruited dozens of young men to fight in foreign wars and was himself, a frontline fighter. Today Abu Muntasir works on discouraging young people from joining the Islamic State through sharing his experiences of violent jihadism. He is also involved in interfaith activities.

Alyas Karmani was a devoted follower of Abu Muntasir, as part of the inner circle of Abu Muntasirs group which was one of the most significant and dangerous jihadi organisations in the UK in the 1980s and 1990s. Alyas Karmani is today an imam and active campaigner against extremism working directly with young people.

Civitates' Tech & Democracy open call

6. mars 2025

Civitates – The European Democracy Fund is a pooled philanthropic fund that was set up in 2018 for the sole purpose of addressing democratic decline and closing civic space in Europe. The case for confronting these threats is growing increasingly urgent. Fritt Ord Foundation is one of the initiators and partners of Civitates.

Civitates has launched its Tech and Democracy open call to support organisations working to ensure safer, more inclusive online spaces (social media platforms, search engines etc.) by improving the enforcement of EU tech regulations at the national level.

This open call offers a unique opportunity to strengthen civil society’s role in holding the tech sector accountable, with a focus on key EU regulations such as the Digital Services Act, GDPR, AI Act or the European Media Freedom Act to name a few.

Nordmenn stadig mer positive til dataspill

5. mars 2025
