A Workshop on Free Speech Debate with Timothy Garton Ash

The Workshop will take place on Wednesday 13 November, 9.30 a.m. – 11 a.m., at Fritt Ord, Uranienborgveien 2, 0258 Oslo

On all continents essential discussions are being conducted on the state of free speech – its meaning, limits, conditions and threats. As Director if the Free Speech Debate Project, a research project and online platform for people around the world to discuss what is means to have freedom of expression, Professor Timothy Garton Ash (Oxford and Stanford Universities) has updated knowledge of the debates on free speech in many countries and languages. He will give a presentation of the project and their experiences so far, as well as respond to questions relating to the European and Norwegian free speech situations.

Call for nominations: Free Media Awards 2026

In collaboration with the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS of Hamburg, the Fritt Ord Foundation has allocated the Free Media Awards – Supporting Independent Journalism in Eastern Europe – annually since 2004 to Eastern European journalists and media that defy every obstacle to tirelessly ensure independent press coverage. Russia’s war against Ukraine and the subsequent wave of disinformation clearly demonstrates the need for independent reporting in the region. Journalist, editorial teams and media companies in and from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine and Hungary who make a contribution to press freedom through their investigative, independent reporting can be nominated for the Free Media Awards.
