European Photo Exhibition Award – epea 01
A Joint European Art Project

How can cooperation in the field of arts and here in particular in the field of photography work? How can European foundations work together and find a joint programme? How can young European artists be supported in their international career?

These were just some of the questions asked before the project “European Photo Exhibition Award” was initiated by the four European foundations Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Portugal, Fritt Ord Foundation in Norway, the Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca in Italy and the Körber Foundation in Germany in 2011- all members of the European Foundation Centre.

Twelve young European photographers – Catarina Botelho, João Grama, José-Pedro Cortes from Portugal for the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Hannah Modigh from Sweden and Marie Sjøvold and Monica Larsen from Norway for the Fritt Ord Foundation, Davide Monteleone, Gabriele Croppi and Pietro Masturzo for the Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca and Linn Schröder, Isabelle Wenzel and Frederic Lezmi for the Körber Foundation – were chosen to participate in the European Photo Exhibition Award01 and were asked to create photo essays on the topic “European Identities”.

The curators Sergio Mah, Portugal, Rune Eraker, Norway, Enrico Stefanelli, Italy and Ingo Taubhorn, Germany were in charge of choosing these photographers and supervising them throughout their creative period. This lasted about six months and also included the participation in workshops. The results of this photographic work toured from Hamburg to Paris to Lucca to Oslo and were presented at renowned exhibition venues. Over 130.000 visitors came to see the shows.

The exhibition in Brussels at the Philanthropy House, the newly opened seat of the European Foundation Centre, would now like to document this successful European collaboration and show how the work of European Foundations can promote a better understanding of European diversity. A second round of the European Photo Exhibition Award – epea02 is on its way and will be starting off in Oslo with the topic “The New Social”.

Opening:
Thursday, 9 January 2014, 17.30hrs
Philanthropy House, Rue Royale 94
1000 Brussels, Belgium

The exhibition will close on 7 March 2014
